Anyone out there born in Portobello Road will understand that it’s in the blood. Even now the only time I feel really at home is when I’m wondering round the market or having breakfast in the café there.
When I was a kid you could walk under the bridge and hear Reggae blasting out of homemade speakers put in front of the shops. It always gave such a friendly atmosphere, those shops aren’t there anymore, I guess the Council are trying to upgrade the area (whatever that means) but then the Council also knocked down Tavistock Crescent and replaced it with red brick eye sores.
I often take my children there and I think it’s rubbed of, they’ve all grown up so well (My Portobello Babes) and I’m really proud of all of them.
The people of that era are gone now and I miss them so much. If you ever go to the Carnival you’ll get a glimpse of the atmosphere that used to be there.
I’d like to dedicate this album to all of those people that have made me who I am today. You may be gone but you’ll never be forgotten and your music will always be here to remind people of the debt they owe you and your generation.
